Should Women Train With Weights
Over the past eighteen years of my career as a personal fitness trainer both here in New York City and in Trinidad I have spent a great amount of time answering questions from women about ‘ how to just tone up’ or ‘shape’ and there is always a huge measure of disbelief when I tell them that the body that they are looking for comes from hitting the weights pretty hard, as opposed to spending hours on the treadmill or in a Pilates class. Walk into any real gym (there are not too many of them anymore) and you will not see large and oversized freaky women with veins bursting through their arms. Instead you will see women with the very lean and toned bodies that most of you wish to achieve. How do they get that way, you may ask. Is it a good spin class that they take on a regular basis? (Not likely) Could it be many hours spent on the Stairmaster? (Not at all) Could it be from doing some core exercises with the ball? (Doubtful!) Is it running or fast walking? (Not in this lifetime!).
Here Are Some Questions That You Should Ask Yourself.
Are you serious about tightening up your behind?
Do you want to have shapely arms
that don’t jiggle when you move?
Do you want to lose that pouch right in your lower
abdominal region?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the answer
lies with the weights. You can do Pilates, Tae-Bo and Step Classes until the cows
come home, and it is not going to do a thing to give you the foundation of healthy
muscle needed to get the look you desire.
I have worked with so many female personal
training clients that spent years consumed with the fallacy that weights were more
of a ‘manly thing’ and instead wasted so much time with classes and aerobics trying
to get into shape. It just does not work, and many will stop training in frustration
when they realize that they are really working hard, but not getting the results
that they are looking for.
You don’t see them very often, but take a look at the
women that work out seriously with weights and don’t use drugs and you will see the
very look that so many of you are seeking. A look at some of the pictures posted
within this article will confirm that every one of these women have an appealing
and very much feminine shape. They all have nice curves to their arms, tight firm
waists, great shoulders and sleek legs. But I need not elaborate more, since all
you need to do is take a look at the pictures.
Weight Training Enhances Femininity
Your sex appeal as well will increase. As you
feel more and more comfortable with your body, so too will your attractiveness increase,
but weight training will do more than just raise your self esteem, the weight bearing
exercise will go a long way in helping protect you from the ravages of osteoporosis.
Weight training has been clinically proven to increase bone density and the added
muscle will mean more mobility overall as you get older. Ever wonder why older people
don’t get around as easily as they did when they were younger- the answer is a loss
of muscle, and by training with weights you can do a lot to maintain your independence
and capacity to move around.
So be not afraid! Weights will not make you into a man,
and moreover, the increased muscle that you will gain will go a long way in increasing
your metabolism, which will help you burn more calories every day. As time goes on,
this will do a lot to get rid of those extra pounds, and more importantly, help work
to keep them off!
Your body needs calories to keep muscle, whereas aerobics only burns calories while you are performing the exercise and for a limited time thereafter, muscle keeps on burning calories 24 hours a day, even while you are asleep, and you can easily increase your overall muscle mass through proper weight training.
To summarize, if you are really serious about having a firm and sensual body, then
weights are what you need.
Don’t be intimidated by the idea that they are only for
men, or that you will be going to a gym where there may be a lot of men as well,
as you are going for the results, not for a place to hang out. It can be a bit much
for a lot of women starting out, and that is why I also recommend a good trainer
to help you discover the wonderful world that lies outside of elliptical machines
and step classes, a world where the body of your dreams is only a barbell or a dumbbell
away!
