The coffee debate has been going back and forth for years, one study claiming benefits,
while another comes out saying that it can be linked to health problems. With so
much conflicting information it can be hard to figure out. I personally don't drink
coffee, but many of our clients are daily drinkers and have real concerns about whether
they should give it up or not. This article was written to give a final answer to
the big coffee question.
Here is a synopsis of the findings thus far, in one study
published in the journal, Circulation, 128,000 men and women showed no increase in
rates of heart disease from drinking coffee.
Another large study published in the
Journal of the American Medical Association showed that of 4000 coffee drinkers,
those that drank over two cups a day had a higher heart disease risk if they had
a particular genetic mutation that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body. This
genetic mutation is fairly common in the general population. The general consensus
however is that a cup or two a day is not a threat to a healthy person.
The problem
is that a lot of coffee cups are also filled with sugar cream, and milk- both verboten
if you are really serious about getting into tip top shape and therein usually lies
the problem as far as your waistline is concerned as they come with extra calories
and fat. The artificial creamers also tend to have some trans fats in them and are
a real no-no and you have to be sure not to over do your caffeine intake. Excess
caffeine can make you anxious, give you headaches, make you irritable and cause heart
palpitations.
So make sure that you limit your intake to no more than two cups a
day (8 ounce cups- not the giant 16 ounce monsters that they sell at the coffee shops)
and have your coffee black- no sugar, no milk, no cream.
