With all the talk of recession it seems that everyone is removing what they see as luxury items from their life, and the focus is on saving as much as they can before being hit by the economic crunch. Important items like basic foodstuff, rent, mortgage are prioritized, while cuts are made on amenities such as health club memberships, personal training, and buying higher quality foods.
Sadly this is the worst thing that anyone could possibly do in times of an economic downturn, even though it may seem at the time to be a good idea. True it is what everyone else is doing but if you take a moment to reflect: wasn’t the blind practice of doing what everyone else was doing that got us into this spiral in the first place?
In the spirit of those that think outside the box, I propose this question; In times when almost all tangible assets are of questionable value, why would any rational thinker even consider compromising the one asset that could help them sustain their very ability to live a comfortable life? That asset isn’t your last ditch savings, or the ever dwindling IRA or 401K, it is your health. Without your health you have nothing, even in the most prosperous of markets. True you could lose your job and your business today, but you can get another job, recreate and revive your business if you have your health. Could you do it in poor health, of course you could, but you will do a poor job of it, and why would you want to?
Too often we inadvertently lower the bar by neglecting the welfare of our bodies and focus only on what we need to do to earn an extra dollar. A recession is a time when we should reflect on what our needs are- do we need to be enslaved by outlandish consumerism, or should we be concerned instead with using the wealth that we have to sustain a higher standard of life? That standard starts not with great vacations or other extravagancies, but with the self given gift of taking care of yourself.
There is no need to cite the numerous studies that validate the fact that eating well, exercising regularly will not only increase your longevity and overall mental and physical health, but also help you increase your performance and mental focus- which at this time are perhaps as important if not more important than being able to look good on the beach. As someone that has invested his life in the practice of a regular training routine and sensible diet, I can hardly overemphasize how much of a tactical business advantage can you have in terms of mental clarity, overall energy and stress reduction as a result, in addition to an almost unending source of positivity and optimism that really lends itself to being able to overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable financial challenges.
Did I mention as well, the benefit of never having to worry about things like headaches, heartburn, indigestion, back pain, joint pain, fatigue, cavities and insomnia? Not to mention the lowered risk if not elimination of any likelihood of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease along with a significant reduction in the potential of suffering from almost all forms of cancer. With so many individuals here in the U.S. also lacking in proper health coverage the preventative route of taking care of yourself during an ecomomic downturn becomes not much important, but essential.
Your health is far too important an asset to forsake during this time and I encourage all of you to think long and hard before making any cuts into the very assets that will enable you to truly survive.
