Is Weight Training Dangerous?

June 9th, 2009 Kevin Richardson No comments

training

In a word, no, but there are some inherent dangers to any type of exercise. All new clients have to sign a waiver freeing me and any agent of Naturally Intense Personal Training NYC from any liability due to the fact that it does indeed have some degree of risk and many have the idea that weight training does lead to injuries. I can say however that in seventeen years of training literally hundreds of clients, I have only seen perhaps two or three injuries sustained in the gym and all as a result of them doing something that they were not supposed to do.

Now you can seriously injure yourself in a gym if you do not know what you are doing, but that is why it is so important to have a good and experienced personal trainer. As a trainer, it is my job to make sure that you get the workout that will give you the results you need without any injury, very much as a pilot works to carry you from place to place safely while strapped in to several thousand pounds of metal moving at almost the speed of sound. It sounds scary, but it really is pretty safe.

Contrast a properly executed weight training program with running, aerobics machine workouts or classes and you will see a huge difference in jury risk. You are almost guaranteed to suffer an overuse injury over time doing those types of repetitive movements whereas the variety and flexibility that a good trainer can offer can ensure an individualized program designed to not only prevent injuries, but strengthen your body to reduce the likelihood of their occurrence at the same time. Think about it, when you get injured, the rehabilitation exercises to get you back on your feet involve weights not aerobic type movements.

Spot Reduction- The Myth That Will Not Go Away!

spotreduction

Spot Reduction

It is a widely held belief that if you exercise one area, it will make the fat go away. I am often told that a client wants to work their arms more or their stomach or butt more since that is their trouble areas and they want to lose fat there. Go to any gym and you will see people on the ab machines everyday and women on hip machines for hours at a time. But it makes no difference in terms of fat reduction since spot reduction is simply a myth and is no more real than being able to turn lead into gold.

You lose fat throughout your body from an increase in muscle mass from a properly executed weight training program and adherence to diet, and you will see the fat loss mostly in the areas where you have the least fat to start with. So if you naturally have a lot of fat in the buttocks area which will most likely be the place that you notice the fat loss last. That is not to say at all that you are not losing fat in that area, but if since there is more fat there, you will see the fat loss faster in areas where there is less fat, like your face and your arms, before you would say in your butt or lower abdominal region (or hips for some women.).

Genetics does play a role in this as does gender as some are predisposed to having more or less fat in certain areas. But the bottom line is that you work the entire body to reduce fat everywhere and as time goes on, you will see that trouble spot go away!

Your Health- The Most Important Asset During a Recession!

June 3rd, 2009 Kevin Richardson No comments

With all the talk of recession it seems that everyone is removing what they see as luxury items from their life, and the focus is on saving as much as they can before being hit by the economic crunch. Important items like basic foodstuff, rent, mortgage are prioritized, while cuts are made on amenities such as health club memberships, personal training, and buying higher quality foods.

Sadly this is the worst thing that anyone could possibly do in times of an economic downturn, even though it may seem at the time to be a good idea. True it is what everyone else is doing but if you take a moment to reflect: wasn’t the blind practice of doing what everyone else was doing that got us into this spiral in the first place?

In the spirit of those that think outside the box, I propose this question; In times when almost all tangible assets are of questionable value, why would any rational thinker even consider compromising the one asset that could help them sustain their very ability to live a comfortable life? That asset isn’t your last ditch savings, or the ever dwindling IRA or 401K, it is your health. Without your health you have nothing, even in the most prosperous of markets. True you could lose your job and your business today, but you can get another job, recreate and revive your business if you have your health. Could you do it in poor health, of course you could, but you will do a poor job of it, and why would you want to?

Too often we inadvertently lower the bar by neglecting the welfare of our bodies and focus only on what we need to do to earn an extra dollar. A recession is a time when we should reflect on what our needs are- do we need to be enslaved by outlandish consumerism, or should we be concerned instead with using the wealth that we have to sustain a higher standard of life? That standard starts not with great vacations or other extravagancies, but with the self given gift of taking care of yourself.

There is no need to cite the numerous studies that validate the fact that eating well, exercising regularly will not only increase your longevity and overall mental and physical health, but also help you increase your performance and mental focus- which at this time are perhaps as important if not more important than being able to look good on the beach. As someone that has invested his life in the practice of a regular training routine and sensible diet, I can hardly overemphasize how much of a tactical business advantage can you have in terms of mental clarity, overall energy and stress reduction as a result, in addition to an almost unending source of positivity and optimism that really lends itself to being able to overcome even the most seemingly insurmountable financial challenges.

Did I mention as well, the benefit of never having to worry about things like headaches, heartburn, indigestion, back pain, joint pain, fatigue, cavities and insomnia? Not to mention the lowered risk if not elimination of any likelihood of type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease along with a significant reduction in the potential of suffering from almost all forms of cancer. With so many individuals here in the U.S. also lacking in proper health coverage the preventative route of taking care of yourself during an ecomomic downturn becomes not much important, but essential.

Your health is far too important an asset to forsake during this time and I encourage all of you to think long and hard before making any cuts into the very assets that will enable you to truly survive.

You can do it till the cows come home & still not get the look you seek!

People have the mistaken idea that aerobic type exercise is a fabulous way to lose weight from burning a lot of calories, but the numbers just do not support this.

Walking or running a mile burns about 100 calories, did you know that if you sat still for the same amount of time you would burn about 50 or 60 calories. The extra expenditure isn’t very significant huge and people get tend to get discouraged at their slow rate of weight loss when doing these types of exercise.

The key is to increase your metabolism so that you burn more calories while doing nothing and how do you do that? Simple- increase muscle mass with a properly executed weight training system, such as the Naturally Intense System.
